So, you want to become a Project Dance Company Member? Here’s some answers to the most frequently asked questions…

How do I become a Company member?

All current and prospective company members must register for a Company audition. Auditions will be held Saturday May 11, Saturday May 18 and Saturday June 1 from 9:00am – 12:00pm. There are 25 spots available for each day and are assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Auditions are mandatory for ALL. There will be no exceptions. There are 75 spots available for the 2019/2020 Project Dance Company.

What do I need for my audition?

During your audition you will be evaluated on all styles of dance – ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, contemporary, and hip hop. Tap and Pointe evaluations will be offered at a later date. Dancers are expected to arrive dressed appropriately and with proper shoes. Ladies must wear black leotard, pink tights, and a neat, slicked back bun. Gentlemen must wear black tee, black tights, and longer hair must be tied back. Dancers may bring versatile leggings or shorts for hip hop and modern. Required shoes are ballet, tap, clean sneakers – no street shoes, jazz shoes and “paws” are optional. “Turners”, pirouettes, and “cheater” shoes are NOT PERMITTED! 

What to expect from your audition?

Auditions will determine Summer Session class placement. You will receive notification via email assigning your suggested Summer schedule in a timely manner after your audition.

What classes are mandatory for Company members?

Company members are expected to participate in the following required classes –

  • Class Requirements – School Year (September 2019 – June 2020)
    Students 10 & under:
    1 Tap, 1 Ballet, 1 Jazz.
    Students 11 – 14: 1 Tap, 1 Modern, 1 1.5 hr. Ballet, 1 Hip Hop, 1 Jazz Jumps and Turns.
    Students 15 & over: 1 Modern,1 1.5hr. Ballet,1 Hip Hop, 1 Jazz Jumps and
    Turns. You must take Tap if you plan to compete Tap

  • Class Requirements – Summer Session (July 2019 – August 2019)
    It is mandatory to participate in Project Dance Summer Session.
    Students 10 & under: 3 Master Class Mondays, Jazz, Ballet and Tap.
    Students 11 & over: 3 Master Class Mondays, Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Hip Hop and One Miscellaneous Choice.

  • Company Choreography Weeks – There will be two weeks of group dance choreography in August. You are not required to be there every day, for every dance. However, you are required to attend all mandatory classes and rehearsal for your assigned dances

How will I know what dances or how many dances I will be invited to participate in?

  • Classes - Dancers will be placed in appropriate classes according to where the director and faculty believe they will see ultimate growth and understanding of proper technique and training. All dancers are subject to class change at any time upon faculty and director’s professional input.

  • Company Dances – Company Casting is posted in early August. Dancers will continue to be evaluated over the course of our Summer Session. Company Casting for all group dances and solos, duos and trios is at the discretion of the Director and choreographers.  Only students who have shown initiative, put the time and effort into classes and made visible improvements will be granted competition dances. Decisions regarding choreography remains at the full discretion of the Director and instructors. Previous season and Summer Session attendance, motivation, and overall demeanor, abilities and performance will be taken into consideration. What DOES NOT factor in is race, color, national or ethnic origin, age, religion or religious creed, disability or handicap, sex or gender, gender identity and/or expression, or sexual orientation.

What is required of all Company members?

All Company members are required to purchase a Company warm-up. Ladies are required to purchase a Company leotard. Gentlemen are required to purchase a Company ballet tee. Company members are required to participate in 3 regional competitions, 1 national competition, 1 dance convention (Mandatory for ages 11 & up, optional for ages 10 & under) and one in-house convention held at the end of August. All Company members are required to participate in the end of year showcase.

What is Summer Session?

Summer Session takes place over a six-week period, from July 8, 2019 through August 16, 2019. It is a full schedule of classes plus an offering of 7 Master Class Mondays with focus on specific genres of dance from professionals in the dance industry. Summer Session is open to both Company members and recreational students. It is an opportunity to continue your dance education, brush up your technique or learn a new skill. Summer session is mandatory for all returning and new Company members. You must register and pay for all six weeks and 3 Master Class Mondays to be considered for Company. You do not need to attend all six weeks however a sliding scale for missed classes will not be offered. Registration for Summer Session must be completed by June 1, 2019 or a late fee will be assessed. Summer Session classes will cap out at 25 dancers. Additional classes will be added on an as needed basis but you will not be able to choose your added classes. 

Can I perform a solo?

New Company Members will be assessed at auditions. If you are experienced, have done a solo in the past and are interested in a solo, please submit a video via email to projectdance732@gmail.com.  

What else do I need to know before I decide to join to Project Dance?

All 2019/2020 Company members must commit and pay company fees in full by Friday June 21, 2019. Company fees cover all group rehearsals and choreography fees, competition coaching fees, company week fees and dress rehearsal venue for competition and showcase.
